san jose. record temperatures around the bay area and today a heat advisory is in place. ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin is in the weather center. >> record highs we had today, the big one, downtown san francisco, the records go back a long way. oldest records in the state. 88 degrees. record high. 88 at the san francisco airport. record high. 90 in oakland. downtown. that was a record. heat advisory in effect till 9:00 p.m. this evening. temperatures outside 70s and 80s. still warm out there. when i get back, things are changing. we will talk more about the heat and what things will look like for the weekend. you can download our ktvu app and get the latest weather alerts everywhere you go. fire crews have been busy

working on two major fires tonight. the soda canyon fire in napa valley and the yellow fire. so far that yellow fire burned 125 acres. it is burning on land owned by kendall jackson. the soda canyon fire broke out yesterday. officials say the conditions are so dry in that area they expect to stay on the scene for several more days. the 28eric fire destroyed the resort and a trailer. investigators don't know what caused the fire but downed pg&e lines were found. new tonight at 6:00 p.m., ktvu's health and science editor john fowler is live in contra costa county where the air quality is bad and the smoke from the fires is making some people worry the fires are burning much closer. john? >> reporter: that's right. conditions right here, right now, better than they were yesterday at this time but it

is still, hot, dry and windy. look at mount diablo. i have been watching it all day and this is the clearest it is been. >> reporter: since early morning, smoke filled contra costa county. he is advising people with lung problems avoid outdoor air. >> smells smoky. >> he had a runny nose. >> reporter: worse around sun rise. >> i smelt it when i woke up this morning. >> maybe i got used to it. >> reporter: at the fire dispatch center the fire danger red flag continued to fly. they fielded an avalanche of 911 calls. >> got over 100 since 2:00 a.m. this morning when the wind shifted wanting to know if there was a fire close. >> reporter: those early season

fires have alarmed experts plus humidity, 6%. and record dry, fuel moisture readings as low as 2%. >> those are not things we see till late summer. we are very concerned that fire season is much, much earlier and more severe earlier. >> reporter: officials warning everyone the danger of a big fire never been so high so early. they are emplorring everyone use common sense. live now, we have a fellow who is doing weed wacking. the officials tell us that no one should do this during high temperature and extreme die for the risk of start -- dry for the risk of starting a fire. if you want to do this wait till it is cooler in the evening time. health and science editor john fowler ktvu channel 2 news.

news chopper 2 caught fire crews putting out hot spots in san jose today. started at 12:30 p.m. behind a housing development on south king road. it came close to some homes but none of them ended up burning. firefighters think yard equipment may have started the fire. >> 500 firefighters are working another wildfire that consumed 7,000 acres. the panther fire started yesterday morning. it is burning 30 miles northeast of chico. no structures are threatened but it is only 10% contained. fire crews in southern california are battling two major wildfires tonight. the larger blaze in ventura county broke out this morning. so far officials say the spring fire burned 6500 acres and flames are threatening hundreds of homes. authorities are evacuating residents. unusually strong winds and dry

conditions are fueling the fire. in riverside county, the summit fire burned 3,000 acres. one home was destroyed and two firefighters suffered minor injuries. authorities evacuated 500 people yesterday but tonight the people have been allowed to return to their home. it is 40% contained. developing news now. we are waiting for a police update on the investigation into the killing of 8-year-old leila fowler. homicide investigators and experts swarmed the home of the girl today who was stabbed to death inside her home this weekend. today we had been expecting police to release a sketch of the suspect but that didn't happen. instead they have called a 7 ep.m. press conference -- 7:00 p.m. press conference. ktvu's crews are headed there and we will have the latest tonight on bay area news at

7:00 on tv 36 and complete coverage coming up on the 10:00 p.m. news. parents and students say they were shocked to learn a teacher has been arrested on 40 counts of sexually abusing children. ktvu's lorraine blanco is live in union city where police are talking to students to see if there are more victims. >> reporter: police say this was a teacher with a good reputation, his students were 8- 9 years old so police techniques have to be more sensitive. >> stupidities and parents -- students and parents are doing their best to cope with the news. police arrested a third grade teacher on 40 outs of molesting a child -- counts of molesting a child. >> it is disturbing. i pray for the families that have to endure what happened. >> reporter: because the

is $1.5 million. live in union city, lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. new security measures are planned for the bay to breakers race this month in san francisco. this comes in the wake of the boston marathon bombings. new tonight at 6:00 p.m., ktvu's david stevenson is live where they are talking about doing more than bag searches and extra patrols. >> reporter: we moved from city hall to market street and we learned about the new measures to keep the bay to breakers safe in the after market of the boston marathon bombings. in a meeting, he layed out the plans for the may 19 event. canine units, bomb technicians and more officers, san francisco police are calling on

outside agents. transportation agency police. san francisco port police officers will guard ferries. fbi agents will be on hand to assist and portable security cameras and license plate recognition devices. >> our safety is a shared burden. and i want to remind the folks that we are expecting that if you see something suspicious, say something. >> reporter: san francisco police chief spoke on the use of private surveillance cameras that helped catch the boston marathon bombings suspects. he hopes to create a map of all the surveillance cameras along market street and network the cameras to provide coverage in the event of an attack or disaster here. they are concerned about where that might lead. >> fear, you know, sometimes

a homicide case brought investigators to china town today. ktvu's mike mibach is live in oakland with the new clues investigators home to drum up by going door to door. mike? >> reporter: detectives said it was time to cross city lines. in my hand is a picture of the victim. this afternoon we were able to dig up new information in this case. we know that he worked a couple jobs in china town and two police say that this may not have been a random attack. that he could have been targeted. >> looking for information on this case here. >> reporter: police officers working the streets of oakland. >> if you think of anything give us a call. >> reporter: the victim, 32 years old. march 22 was when he was shot and killed. >> initial reports we believe that robbery was the reason why the crime was committed. but we developed other leads in

the case. >> reporter: new leads that brought them to china town where they handed out flyers. it is here where he worked two jobs. >> do you recognize the guy? >> no. >> reporter: she lives in the neighborhood where he was killed. >> crime is up on our street. >> neighborhood that has a private security checking names and addresses of those who pull up. >> i like it. seems invasive if you don't know why he is there. >> we are thinking outside the box. >> reporter: detectives are looking for a killer, trying to determine if he was targeted. >> well known in the community and we believe there is someone in this community that knows -- maybe not all the details but some of the details on what happened that night. there is a $10,000 reward in the case. this is police's first homicide investigation of the year.

live in oakland, mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. a san jose chemist arrests on planting tainted orange juice at a starbucks being released without being charged. ramineh behbehanian was arrested monday night. prosecutors had till today to charge her and they declined to do so. the district attorney's office says they are waiting for lab tests to determine what was in that orange juice. prosecutors say they are still investigating and could still charge ramineh behbehanian. barbara boxer rallied support for new legislation requiring labels on genetically engineered food. >> let's not have this state by state approach. let's have one national standard that makes sense. should be trusted to make informed decisions. in oakland workers said today that facility has a serious rat problems. they often see rats in the area and today the workers told management something has to be done. >> the ivy is a breeding ground for them. >> we want to have a safe environment so we need look into the issue. >> managers say the rats appear to be coming from a slew off of the creek. that creek is federally protected which might make it difficult to set out rat traps. >> san francisco animal care officials are playing host to a stray tortoise. a pedestrian spotted it sunday making its way down campbell street. how the tortoise made his break

aaron hern who was injured in the boston marathon bombings is sitting court side tonight at the warriors game. >> really cool to be here. especially seeing the warm ups. >> aaron, his parents and sister have the best seats in the house to watch the warriors take on the nuggets in game six. he suffered serious injuries to both of his legs but tonight he told us he is feeling a lot better. >> about 2-1/2 weeks ago, 12 birthday yesterday, happy birthday to him. >> big game tonight. >> he will see a wild one as are about 19,000 fans.
